The most amazing books and comics are, to me, the ones that are so engaging and immersive that I can forget for a moment that I’m standing shoulder to shoulder with strangers on a subway car. Generally if something can overcome that level of distraction, it’s pretty compelling.
(Sketchy comic is sketchy for time, but I hope I can convey that feeling just a touch).
I was reading the last volume of Crossgame recently and I can’t stop thinking about how that particular manga does that SO WELL. Everytime I read that book, I’m there. I can feel the stifling summer air. I’m sitting in the stands on a seat so hot it burns the back of my legs. I’m shielding my eyes against the bright of the sun and wondering WILL OUR TEAM MAKE IT?
It’s kind of amazing.
