Union Square in the winter is one of my take-for-granted Christmas memories. We may not have snow but we make up for it with giant trees, lights, skate rinks, and beautiful old department stores with festive holiday windows. Relics from an era when going downtown was a big event and people would wear their Sunday best to walk around, perhaps.

The windows have been less impressive as I grow older but it’s still a fun Christmas Eve thing to do. Especially Macy’s, where they have adoptable SPCA critters in the window being ADORABLE.
